Description

The FlexGE Program is an opportunity for students who weren’t admitted or didn’t apply to BYU to take BYU classes and experience campus. Students in this program take BYU classes for university credit both in Provo and at the BYU Salt Lake Center. They also get to experience campus life by living in BYU-approved housing, attending a YSA ward, and being involved in campus activities and events.

Enrollment

To participate in FlexGE, students must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Get an ecclesiastical endorsement

  • Have a high school diploma (or equivalent)

  • Enter with a minimum 2.0 GPA

  • Be at least 17 years old by the first day of class

  • Have US citizenship or the ability to study in the US without an F-1 visa sponsored by BYU

Once determined eligible, students can enroll in the FlexGE Program up until a week before classes begin. A student’s enrollment in FlexGE stays active until they’ve gone an entire academic year (fall semester through summer term) without enrolling for credit. If a student’s enrollment lapses, they need to submit a new FlexGE application to continue taking classes.

Prospective students who have a GPA lower than 2.0 can petition to participate in FlexGE by meeting with a FlexGE academic advisor. Current students who let their GPA fall below a 2.0 must meet with a FlexGE academic advisor to create a success plan before they can continue in the program.

BYU Experience

FlexGE students are encouraged to become part of the BYU community and participate fully in activities that help them develop the attributes outlined in the Aims of a BYU Education. Students can volunteer with Y serve, join academic clubs, get a campus job, and serve in a calling in their YSA ward. With a few exceptions, FlexGE students have the same level of access to campus offices and resources as admitted BYU students.

FlexGE student do not have access to:

  • Day classes during fall and winter semesters

  • On-campus housing during fall and winter semesters

  • Federal financial aid

  • Intercollegiate athletics (including extramural sports)

  • Performing groups or teams that require tryouts, auditions, or enrollment in day classes,

  • Individual, group, and couples therapy at CAPS

Student Support

FlexGE students enjoy a high level of academic support provided by Continuing Education. They have access to free tutoring, academic skills coaching, and workshops on topics like time management, study skills, and test preparation through our unique Student Success Center. Each student also has an assigned peer mentor through the Student Success Center who is there to help with questions, point out resources, and ease the transition to university life.

FlexGE has program specific academic advisors who help students navigate the FlexGE program, create a success plan, choose classes, and, ultimately, help with a transfer plan to BYU or another university. Students should meet with their academic advisor at least once per academic year.

University Credit and Transfer

The FlexGE program hopes to help every student create a successful transfer plan, whether that’s to BYU or another university. While participation in FlexGE does not guarantee admission to BYU, students do have a dedicated support team to help them identify and achieve their academic goals.

All courses taken during the FlexGE program do transfer to BYU and apply to the student’s degree program upon acceptance to the university. Credits transferred to other universities will be evaluated according to their respective transfer policies.

Students from outside the state of Utah may also use the time in FlexGE to establish Utah residency. Utah residency may allow students to qualify for resident tuition rates at public universities in Utah. Students should check with both the state and their preferred universities for specific residency requirements.
